Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a new medical technology that uses a magnetic field and radio-waves to examine the internal organs of our body. It does not use x-rays. The pictures produced during the scan can help your doctor define the differences between healthy and diseased tissues. The scan pictures provide valuable information to help your doctor choose the most suitable treatment for you.
Depending on the information that your doctor needs, the scan can take between 15 to 45 minutes.
In some cases the radiologist may order an image enhancement agent. This is a solution which is given as an injection into a vein in your arm. If this is needed, it does not mean that your condition is more serious. So do not worry. It simply means that the radiologist wants a clearer picture.
The radiologist will review the images obtained during the scan to check that they are clear. The report will be sent to your doctor who will then discuss the scan results with you.
