At Island Hospital, speech therapy goes beyond the diagnosis and treatment of speech delays and disorders. Our services also include learning and literacy sessions to help every individuals make the connection between spoken and written language.

We offer a wide range of speech /language / communication /swallowing assessment and therapy on cases such as:

  • Speech sound or articulation disorders – occur when an individual continue to have difficulty producing sounds that are expected at a certain age. This can lead to reduced intelligibility of speech, which leads to frustration.
  • Apraxia of speech – an impaired ability to plan and sequence the motor movements necessary to produce speech in the absence of any obvious muscular problem. This typically results in reduced clarity of speech and frustration.
  • Receptive language delay /disorder i.e. the impairment in the ability to understand and process language both verbal and /or written.
  • Expressive language delay /disorder i.e. the inability to produce language. It is based on the content (semantics), form (grammar), and use (pragmatics) of language at different development levels.
  • Cognitive – communication disorders – the inability to communicate effectively usually due to memory loss, inattention perception and organisation impairment especially after a stroke or dementia.
  • Semantic – pragmatic disorder – usually considered as the continuum Of Autistic Spectrum Disorders where a child will find it difficult to understand the meaning of words and struggle to use language in a social, functional and appropriate way.
  • Disorder of fluency which includes children /adults who stammer /stutter and clutter. Stammering is usually featured by signs of repetition, prolongation and blocking of sounds / syllables during speaking
  • Disorder of voice – Many different things can lead to voice problems, such as vocal abuse, misuse and paralysis. If a voice is rough or he /she runs out of breath when speaking, this may be indicative of a voice problem. There are many different types of voice disorders than can be helped with therapy.
  • Dysphagia /oral feeding disorders – an impairment in the ability to eat and drink including biting, chewing, swallowing and coughing, gagging while eating. It is important to get this corrected because if it is left unattended, it may lead to aspiration and lung infections.
